Research activities on designing healthcare support systems in the field of ambient assisted living are mainly focused on addressing two problems: improving the quality of life for people in their own homes, especially the elderly; and supporting nurses and doctors in hospitals. Less research has been done about effective systems to support caregivers which assist people with disabilities within assisted living facilities (ALFs).

The thesis of Alberto Monge, presented in October 2015, started from a set of requirements and guidelines which stem from a series of focus groups held in four assisted living facilities in the Turin area, and proposed a system able to support the daily activities of healthcare assistants in ALFs. Moreover, the system was designed and developed by taking into account possible interactions with "connected" devices (e.g., sensors, smartphones, smartwatches, etc.) that healthcare assistants and hosts may utilize.
